Under the supervision of the Laboratory Safety Manager, the Research Safety Specialist will assist with the implementation of the university research safety program and will perform comprehensive laboratory, biological, and radiation safety inspections to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations, and provides training and technical and safety-related regulatory assistance to the research community.
Additional job responsibilities include:

Developing written materials detailing research safety hazards (biological, chemical and radiation), incompatibilities, health effects, and train research personnel on related topics
Assisting PIs and researchers in the development of lab-specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) as they relate to lab operations, experimental procedures, exposures, calibrations, lasers, contamination surveys, close outs etc.

Working with labs to identify safety needs and gaps and to implement programs that will address those needs.

Performing research safety inspections and audits, including annual/biannual bio, lab and radiation inspections, biannual inspections of high-hazard labs, annual controlled substance inspections; personnel protective equipment (PPE) inspections; short-notice inspections of laboratories of concern, and other inspections as required.
Documents results and recommends corrective action where non-compliance is found.

Assisting in the development and implementation of safety programs to meet University and regulatory requirements.
Establishes documents and communicates standards, guidelines, and procedures; and may lead a specific safety program.

Providing technically sound advice and recommendations to PIs, lab personnel, and students to ensure maximum safety and regulatory compliance.

Developing and conducting safety training.

Preparing fact sheets and other authoritative informational materials on safety and regulatory topics
Investigation and documentation of research safety incidents; formulation of appropriate safety recommendations/requirements in response to findings.

Assisting in protocols review, radioactive materials shipping and receipt.

Emergency on-call coverage and response, as needed (2 weeks/year as primary and 2 weeks/year as secondary).
Will perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree
3 years combined education/experience
Excellent analytical and data-gathering skills, with an exemplary attention to detail.

Experience developing automated tools used to calculate metrics and visualization tools for reporting.
Ability to lead, teach and train others.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to tailor delivery to varied audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
3 or more years safety specialist work, including 1 or more years with bio, lab and rad safety experience.

Bachelor's of Science degree in biology, chemistry, virology, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related area equivalent combination of education, experience / training.

Ability to apply the concepts of biosafety, including criteria for establishing biosafety containment levels, to various research and laboratory applications.

Thorough knowledge / understanding of specific EH&S field(s) including related laws and regulations; and general knowledge / understanding of all EH&S fields.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with people in a wide variety of job classifications.
Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
Ability to maintain data and records.

Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines.
Ability to evaluate the workplace situations for safe handling, storage, use, or disposal of biohazardous and other hazardous materials.

Ability to develop a strong rapport with academic personnel to thoroughly evaluate research projects and develop creative solutions to unique and often complex problems.

Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints.
Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to write clear and concise technical reports.

Experience in designing, developing, and presenting training programs to individuals and groups.
Strong skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required, including use of a variety of computer programs and applications.

Knowledge of Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for biosafety as they apply to infectious agents, recombinant DNA, and Bloodborne pathogens.
Salary range:
The annual base salary range for this position is $77,000 - $90,000.
