Summary:
Assists the PACU Charge Nurse GI in the daily clinical operations of the PACU in accordance with established Federal, State, and accreditation standards and center policies and procedures.
Participates in direct patient care including maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment.
The pre-operative nurse is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and providing high quality, individualized patient care in the pre-operative period of the patient's surgical experienceEssential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Clinical SkillsoAssesses patient/significant others understanding of disease process and need for surgical intervention.
oPerforms pre/post operative teaching to patient/significant other.
oDemonstrates appropriate nursing management and intervention preoperatively and post operatively.
oAssess the patient for level of recovery from anesthesia.
oProvides effective airway management postoperatively.
oAssesses and manages postoperative complications such as nausea and vomiting.
oProvides wound assessment and management to ensure uncomplicated wound healing.
oProvides safe medication administration.
oManages patient complications/emergencies preoperatively and postoperatively.
oUtilizes aseptic technique and infection control principles to establish and maintain intravenous access.
oReports significant patient information to medical staff appropriately.
oDemonstrates skill and knowledge in providing appropriate patient care across the age span.
oDemonstrates compliance with abuse reporting responsibilities.
oIdentifies and reports suspected child, spousal/partner, and elder abuse per protocol.
oDemonstrates knowledge and skill in caring for the latex sensitive patient.
oDemonstrates ability to identify latex sensitive patients.
oCommunicates to appropriate personnel.
oInitiates and follows procedure protocol.
oDemonstrates appropriate care for the patient experiencing pain.
oDocuments pain history and assessment.
oDemonstrates techniques to relieve patient's pain.
oEvaluates effectiveness of technique used.
oProvides patient/family teaching for the management of the patient experiencing pain.
oDocuments patient response during recovery.
oFacilitates actions and activities that support accountability to practice.
oIdentifies and initiates problem resolution.
oActively participates, develops, and implements activities and measures promoting quality care.
oAdheres to the pre-op room standards of nursing care.
oAdmits patients to pre-op.
Obtain and review pre-operative lab work.
oPerform pre-operative interview of patients.
oObserve vital signs, stat and maintain IV's and IV sites, dressing, tubes, drains and any special monitoring equipment.
oAdministers pre-operative medications as ordered by the physicians.
oImplements plan of care.
Medical RecordsoDemonstrates knowledge of medical record policy and procedure in management of patient information.
oParticipates in medical records TQM.
CommunicationoListens respectfully, gives feedback directly, honestly and talks with others to clarify differences.
oUtilizes translation services when needed.
oUtilizes appropriate services when needed to communicate with employees and patients with speech and hearing disorders.
oEffectively communicates and interacts with patients, their family, and other external and internal clients (including fellow employees) from diverseQualityoDemonstrates a willingness to look at new ideas and work in a changing environment.
oUnderstands, verbalizes and participates in the quality improvement process.

Other Skills and AbilitiesWorking knowledge and experience in PACU from hospital or ambulatory surgery center including direct patient care.
Ability to adhere to work schedule and manage time appropriately.
Ability to utilize resources in a timely, organized and cost effective manner.
Knowledge of patient monitoring equipment.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $60.
00 $62.
00 hour ; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, licensure, skills, and experience.
The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered.
