Reporting to the Southern California Regional Vice President (RVP), the Managing Director will provide direct underwriting, sales leadership and broker management for the Los Angeles Territory.
Responsibilities will include:
Sales, Agency, and Underwriting ManagementEnsure functional and regulatory integrity of the book of business and overall compliance with The Hartford s guidelines, policies, service standards and levels of authority.
This requires overseeing the Quality Analysis process and ensuring its effectiveness, consistency, timeliness, and fairness.
Coach Underwriters in the performance of their roles to ensure consistent practice of Sales Excellence discipline and cross-sell across MLC & Global Specialty.
Build strong, distinctive strategic partnerships with key agents and brokersDevelop and implement segment sales plans with VIP s and Top PartnersUnderwriting ExecutionResponsible for ensuring Core UW execution in accordance with guidelines and direction in partnership with DUO and referral teamEnsuring underwriting health for regional book in accordance with quality and compliance guidelinesMonitors risk selection & pricing on regional portfolio to ensure profitable financial returnsProvides guidance on coverage, pricing, program structures and services offered in Core businessEnforces utilization of all UW tools (ADAPT, PACE, CUE, Policy Center, SFDC, etc.
)Demonstrates masterly level understanding and utilization of UW & Sales reportsPromotes utilization of services:
Claims and Risk EngineeringMiddle Market Underwriting OperationsInspires team to achieve profit and growth objectives through risk selection, individual account pricing, mix of business, flow of business and management of quality analysis for the team.
Ensures technical underwriting knowledge guiding the actions of underwriters in writing and retaining quality businessEnsures that underwriting policies, practices and guidelines are understood and adhered to by the Middle Market underwriting staff.
Provides ongoing technical development through coaching and QA results analysisDriving consistency in underwriting routines and accountabilities that deliver proven results.
These include pipeline & agency management, underwriting practices, client facing meetings, renewal retention strategies, service delivery and enterprise representation.
People Leadership and Development Attracts, selects, and develops high caliber talent from within or outside of the organization.
Ensures staff continuity for key positions by anticipating and planning for future staffing needs.
Effectively manages staff through active performance management, implementation of a meaningful development process; builds a strong team which fosters collaboration, open dialogue and involves them in critical decision making and planning activities.
Closely manages plan results on an office wide and individual basis and directs implementation of specific actions to address business shortfalls in both profit and growth.
We are looking for a strong candidate who will drive Sales, Marketing, Profit, Growth, and Quality of Middle Market business.
The Managing Director leads the execution of the Middle Market Strategic and Operating plans within local market territories through strong agency/territorial management and leading a high-performance team focused on achievement, commitment and innovation, requiring a deep understanding of local market and competitors.
Qualifications:
Candidates must be highly regarded for their leadership capabilities.
Previous underwriting team management experience is a plus, as well as the following:

years multi-line carrier underwriting experience in P&C Middle MarketStrong sales and negotiation skills; agency territorial management experience and strong relationships in the Los Angeles market are a plusSolid financial / business acumen and skillsProven track record of setting goals and delivering results.

CompensationThe listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market.
Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role.
The base pay is just one component of The Hartford s total compensation package for employees.
Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
The annualized base pay range for this role is:
